Perspective

My heart literally aches. “Aches” isn’t even a strong enough word, honestly. I’ve been following Courtney’s blog about her son, Tripp since Patrice first mentioned his story. I’ve put my head in my hands and sobbed as I read about a Mom’s unconditional and never tiring love of her son. I’ve looked at my boys and wondered if I could have the strength to watch them go through so much pain, to watch them slowly – and painfully – get worse.

I don’t know Courtney. I’ve never talked to her, but her life and story have changed me. I hug my boys tighter, kiss them harder, and cuddle with them longer. More importantly though, I have perspective. I understand that so many of my “worries” are really luxuries. I have the luxury of getting frustrated at stubbornness, temper tantrums, disobedience, or picky eating. The fact that none of those issues are life or death in our world is a luxury….a luxury that I take for granted on a daily basis.

Tripp passed away. After months – years, really – of an up and down roller coaster of health, emotions, and pain, he passed away. Peacefully. In his Mommy’s arms.

Since he’s been born, Courtney’s life has revolved around Tripp in a way none of us can fully understand. I say my life revolves around my kids and their schedule, but the truth is I’m allowed to be much more selfish than that. Courtney ate, slept, and breathed Tripp and his needs – and joyfully so. I can only imagine the helplessness I would feel in her shoes. I’m certain she’ll mourn – a profound mourning of her soul that can only be heard and truly understood by her Creator. I don’t know Courtney. I didn’t know Tripp. But my heart will be mourning right along with her.

I can’t wait to meet Tripp in heaven. I look forward to seeing his body without wounds and healthy. Or maybe he will have those wounds, I don’t know. I do know that he won’t hurt. I know that Jesus will be able to wrap His arms around Tripp and squeeze him more tightly than he’s ever been hugged. I know that he’s free of pain and that his years here already seem like a distant dream that passed so quickly. I believe that Tripp is finally seeing the purpose of his suffering, how God used one little life to perform miracles. I hope I get to see Courtney hugging Tripp in heaven.

Until that moment though, God brings Courtney to my mind almost daily. She asked her blog readers to pray in Tripp’s last days that he would feel peace, and I gladly prayed exactly that. I’m now finding myself praying that precise thing for her. That a soul torn to shreds by grief would be calmed by the hands of the Comforter and that even in the midst of her deepest mourning, His arms would be wrapped tightly around her – hugging her, rocking her, speaking softly and tenderly to her. Unconditionally loving and caring for a wounded heart the same way she loved and cared for a wounded boy.

And talk with him awhile.

It breaks my heart to have to think

That he won’t graduate from school.

Or go to prom, or have kids of his own,

Or even break a single rule.

Tell him for me- please don’t forget,

That I wanted him to stay.

That I tried and tried to ease his pain,

But it was only YOU who knew the way.

I know you have a choir of angels,

Who play music while they fly.

And if they need a drummer boy-

Well, my Tripp, he’s their guy!

You’ve probably seen it for yourself,

That he’s one brave kid, indeed.

But he’ll be scared if You have to leave,

So stay with him, I plead.

If he has to go to Heaven first,

I’ll miss him every second he’s gone,

I'm so pumped about the new Perfect Fit 2-Size diapers I'll be stocking soon! These are my favorite cloth diapers because they truly do fit babies from birth to potty training. The Small will fit babies from five to twenty pounds, and the Large fits kiddos from sixteen to forty-five pounds. The diapers feature snaps for the width and the length of the diapers, allowing you adjust the fit based on your child's perfect fit. 2-Size diaper save our family both time and money, and are always first go-to diaper!

new year, new beginning

I happen to really love New Year's. My husband and I typically take it easy and watch the ball drop in our pajamas, cuddled on the couch! I appreciate ringing in the new year with that sense of calm and comfort, and I can't lie - I happen to love resolutions. The OCD organizer in me gets so excited to look over the past year and remember the things I did well, and the things I did...notsowell. Setting goals seems to be ingrained in my DNA, so resolutions are always a little fun for me! And honestly - nine times out of ten I actually keep the resolution and meet the goal. You know, not to brag. But yeah, I sprinkly hearts love resolutions.

As I look back over 2011, I'm a little stunned at how MUCH my family accomplished. 2011 was the year of my family for me. I spent most of my efforts and time helping our family adjusting to an entirely different state, culture, and climate. My husband and I have worked to make communication and quality time a priority, and we're both constantly seeking to sharpen our parenting skills. 2011 also brought a 60 lb. weight loss for me, so I'm sure you can imagine the time I took to work out, plan meals, track calories, and stay motivated.

Oh, and clothes shopping. Everyone knows the best part of losing weight is suddenly "needing" new clothes!

I worked hard with Serwa Chic in 2011 and kept up with the steady stream of orders coming through, but advertising, promoting, and growing the business just needed to take a back seat to my family this year.

Now that my life is more stable (and of course, now that both my boys will be in preschool starting in the fall), I'm ready to take a new look at Serwa Chic. I'll be spending some time praying and seeking God's thoughts on this business and my professional future, I'll be deciding some action steps, and I'll be working towards accomplishing the goals by the end of 2012.

Some of the idea swirling in my head are to register for and attend several craft fairs throughout the year (especially the summer), to aggressively pursue stocking my products locally, to advertise, and to re-calculate some of my prices.

So look out, 2012. Here comes Serwa Chic, armed with a battery of goals and action steps!

Whether your New Year's will be spent drinking cocktails with friends or snuggled on the couch in your pjs, I hope you get a chance to reflect over 2011. Remember that mistakes aren't failures, they're an opportunity to learn and adjust. Happy New Year!

Other Projects

It’s funny how little sewing I usually do for my own family. Shawn occasionally hands me pants that need the holes sewn up, or shirts that need a button re-attached – projects that take an entire ten minutes to do. Fifteen if you count threading the machine.

Easy peasy.

And yet those projects always get put to the bottom of my list. And that one pair of jeans slowly grows into a pile of jeans, shirts, blankets – until I can’t deny any longer that it must be addressed.

So when Patrice called me with an advent calendar idea for our boys, I jumped on the chance to make something meaningful for our family. Knowing that a dear friend was counting on me to get it made before December 1st gave me just the push I needed to make the project a priority! Patrice and I discussed in detail the layout of the calendar, and did plenty of research on Etsy and Pinterest. In the end, we decided a pocket calendar gave us both the most flexibility in our different homes and allowed room for our various activities. I started searching for the fabric for this project in July, started cutting the fabric in September, and began sewing in October. See? It takes me FORever to make personal projects!

And just so you’re aware, I broke six…yes, six…needles on this dang calendar. Hmph.

Also, this was the first time I’d ever painted with stencils, so there were a few less than professional numbers on the calendars:

I had so much fun making these advent calendars, but I've had even more fun doing the activities each day. I love wondering which activity will come next, I love that we're invited to step out of our comfort zones, and I absolutely love that I have an opportunity - every day - to teach my boys that Christmas isn't about presents and candy. And let's be honest, it's a lesson I happen to need some help learning, too.

BOLD:Fort Worth

I had the amazing opportunity recently to join a local boutique (Simple Baby) at a Baby and Family Expo in Arlington, TX! Because meeting with like-minded Moms and learning more about our new area are both important to me, I jumped at the chance. The expo operated in conjunction with a play (BOLD: Fort Worth) whose proceeds benefited the Tarrant County Birth Network. What an amazing way to be a part of something SO worthwhile!

I loved answering cloth diaper questions and explaining why Serwa Chic 2-Size AIOs are a better choice than traditional one-size AIOs, and had a blast experiencing local business and getting to know other Moms. I can't wait to attend further expos and am looking forward to this next step in Serwa Chic's journey!

Update on All Things Serwa Chic!

It's so crazy to think that Serwa Chic has been in business for almost 2.5 years now - time has surely flown right by! As each day passes, I'm falling more in love with owning my own business, despite the time and diligence required to run it well. Because I was primarily sewing and working during my oldest son's preschool days, I unofficially took the summer "off" to spend time with and invest in my kiddos. I worked hard beforehand to have a fully stocked shop, and didn't do much sewing or marketing. I wasn't sure how my plan would work out, but I gotta tell ya - it was a great decision!

Now that preschool has begun again and fall is officially heralded in by Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte, I'm back at it! With an entire summer to think and plan, one of my first orders of business has been to streamline my product line. I've taken a careful look at the products I stock and have done the math six ways 'till Tuesday (oh my, what a fun phrase). For the amount of time each of my products takes to make (especially the amount of time they take away from my family), the cost of the materials, and the price, it only makes sense to reconsider what I offer. I've decided to continue making and stocking my Mess Free Long Sleeve Bibs, Modest Mama Nursing Covers, and Perfect Fit AIOs. I'll be phasing out fitted diapers, diaper covers, and possibly the sized AIOs. I know, I'm sad about it too, but I can't deny that it's the wisest thing to do. I'll still be selling the fitteds, covers, and AIOs that I have in stock - so hurry and grab yours while they're still there!

One of my other informal projects for the summer was to test the waters of stocking my products in local shops. I'm still in the planning phases with a couple of boutiques, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the future for Serwa Chic holds in that avenue!

Finally, with the advent of a regular fall schedule, I'll certainly begin sewing and stocking while my sweet boy is at school. I have a ginormous roll of flannel that's just waiting to be sewn into Perfect Fit 2-Size AIOs. Time to dust off the sewing machine and get to creating! It's about stinkin' time. I'm so pleased to announce that I have just stocked some brand new All In Ones (include some newborn sizes)! I have been working on this round of diapers since I was pregnant with my son, Cohen (who is now nearing seven months). To say that this stocking seemed to take entirely too long would be an understatement. Then again, I guess that's what happens when you have a baby and move across the country, huh?

The Playdate Crashers

Is it silly that it makes me feel important that I was asked to be a guest on a Mommy podcast? Even if the podcasters are friends from college? Well, silly or not - I was flattered to be asked by Jaime and Krista to guest interview on their Playdate Crashers Podcast. I started listening to their podcast because I thought it'd be fun to see what my friends were up to, but have been excited that it's genuinely well done, witty, and insightful. I love that it feels like I'm just chatting with friends over coffee while our kids play (hence, the Playdate Crashers name), and I'm almost always jotting down some website or other resource they share.

They're doing a really great series right now about working Moms, and asked me to share about my experiences as a WAHM. Of course, I feel entirely unqualified to be giving tips about how to balance everything. After debating though, I realized that my kids are still alive, so I must be doing something right. Right? Hmmmm.

Pea Wee Baby Review

I don't usually do reviews on my blog site, but I recently stumbled across a product that was so awesome I just had to share. For the sake of full disclosure, I want to make sure you know that I bought this product with no discounts or other special treatment, and that I am being given nothing in return for my review. My review isn't shaded because I'm getting something out of it.

Allow me to bring to your attention the most ingenious swaddle known to man. I have a two year old and a five month old, and both have intense streaks of stubborn (I have no idea where they get it...ahem). My two year old could bust out of his brand name velcro swaddle within twenty seconds of being laid down, and my five month old will work and grunt for as long as it takes to get his little hands out. My husband and I are up four or five times a night with Cohen (the infant) and have to re-swaddle him at least two or three times.

So you see why I was so intrigued when I ran across Pea Wee Baby's website? Like anything awesome in this world, Tamara's swaddle concept began out of need. Her daughter was a swaddle Houdini, and Tamara set about finding a solution that would keep her swaddled. Thus the SwaddleBuddy was born.

I ordered the SwaddleSack in size Small (in a super cute robot print) to use for Cohen right now and a SwaddleSuit in size Large to use as Cohen gets bigger. I like the idea of letting his legs kick free to eventually help transition him out of the swaddle. My husband and I eagerly checked the mail each day for our swaddle to arrive, and I put Cohen in it the first night we received it. Would you like to know how often my husband and I were up that night?

Not once. Zero. Zilch. Cohen slept from 8:00pm - 8:30am. Of course, my toddler was up twice, and I considered swaddling him, but decided that might look silly. Yes sir, sweet Cohen slept 12.5 hours. Since that night, he and I have both gotten sick, so he's been waking in order to eat and let us know he doesn't feel well, but I have high hopes that we'll once again regain sleep once this bug passes.

This is the first swaddle we've found that actually keeps our son swaddled, secured, and comfortable. Tamara has designed her swaddle to have pieces of fabric that loop around your child's arms, keeping them tightly snug. The rest of the swaddle then wraps around the baby and velcros in back. If commercial swaddles just aren't cutting it for your particular brand of houdini, I highly recommend Tamara's SwaddleBuddy. It's an ingenious design that is well made by a fellow WAHM. As for the Maurer household...we'll be ordering another one and looking forward to a few more nights of peaceful slumber.

Today, I'm introducing a brand new section to the Serwa Chic online shop! It's my favorite area of any store - the clearance section!

As I work on my Serwa Chic products, there are sometimes pieces that end up - for lack of a better word - wonky. Sometimes there's a snafoo in the serger, sometimes the thread gets caught up on the sewing machine, sometimes the fabric is cut slightly unevenly, and sometimes I'm just not satisfied with the way something came out. Rather than just throw these pieces away, I've decided to sell them for a steeply discounted price! The irregularities are usually different for each item, although the product will still function as well as a fully priced product.

A Project For My Son

Like the shoemaker's son who had holes in his shoes, my kids usually get my sewing leftovers. If one of my diapers or other products isn't up to Serwa Chic standards - it very often gets thrown into my sons' cloth diaper bins. When I make a product for the first time, it's very first testers are always my sons. I regularly have great intentions of doing sewing projects for my family, but it usually takes me months to complete even the most simple of projects.

When we signed my son up for preschool this year and found out he'd need a nap mat, I was determined to make his cover. My reasons for so passionately wanting to make the cover were partially selfish and partially selfless. Creating and making things for my family and friends that is better - or at least more personal - than something that could be bought in a store is my way of showing them love. I wanted to be able to send my kid to school with something that he used every day to remind him that I love him, miss him, and care about him. I highly doubt he's thinking anything other than, "I love this place! It's so much fun!" as he's settling in for his nap, but I don't care. It makes me feel better!

And then there's the slightly selfish reason. Jude's preschool tuition is waved for us because my husband is on staff at the same place the preschool is held. That's a pretty sweet bonus because the school is a highly sought after preschool in a swanky town. I've been told one of the children of a Dallas Cowboys football player goes there. Not that I would recognize any of the players even if they smacked me with a football, but that's still pretty cool bragging rights, huh? My son goes to preschool with a Cowboys' kid.

Anyway.

So knowing this fact made me oddly paranoid about my kids' nap mat. I didn't want everyone else to have fancy schmancy nap mats and my son to roll in with a raggedy old mat. I know, it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to obsess about this one thing, but I know you've done it too. Don't judge my Mommy paranoia.

Of course his first day, I totally walked into preschool creeping on everyone's nap mat. How did my son's measure up, you wonder? It turns out his is obnoxiously bigger than everyone else's, and definitely more fancy. It doesn't even fit into his cubby. I love the irony.

The mat itself folds up, but I didn't want to have to hold it all together when we were carrying it in and out of school. I attached ribbon and D rings to hook around it, which makes the perfect carrying strap as well. As a bonus, I can loosen the strap to perfectly hold Jude's choo-choo blanket. I also attached snaps at the bottom so the cover doesn't slip start to slip off with my son's violent sleeping tendencies.

So there you have it, the one sewing project a year I do for my kids! Just kidding, I'm actually hoping to play around with some potty training pants patterns here in the next couple of months. Back Into the Swing of Things

It's so hard to believe that it's been a little over eight weeks since our sweet Cohen was born! It's been so exciting to see his personality develop as he grows, and he absolutely melts my heart with his smiles and cuddles!

I've been working behind the scenes for the past week to get things ready for an exciting announcement! I'm so pleased to be able to open up the Serwa Chic shop several weeks earlier than I had planned - the new re-opening date is officially Tuesday, October 19th!

That's right, just eleven more days until you'll once again be able to order your favorite long sleeve bibs, nursing covers, and two-size snappy diapers!

Patrice's Sneak Peek

You may remember my sweet friend Patrice and her adorable son, Jonah. I had the privilege of working with Patrice to create EB-friendly cloth diapers almost a year ago so that Jonah could wear cloth diapers without the casing affecting his skin. As Jonah grows, his Mom faces new developmental challenges - including self-feeding! It's important to keep any food dribbles from getting into Jonah's bandages, and it's helpful to not have to wipe extra food off of Jonah's already sensitive skin.

Our Serwa Chic bibs are perfect for the learning self-feeder (and even for the experienced self-feeder who just likes to be destructive...not that I have one of those or anything), but a few modifications needed to be made for sweet Jonah.

The sleeves needed to be made wider to allow extra room for Jonah's bandages (and to deter friction from the sleeves on Jonah's arms, wrists, or hands), and I added a much softer fleece at the neck instead of the usual binding that would rub on Jonah's neck. I covered the heads of the snaps with fleece and strategically placed the snaps to give Patrice several different neck-sizing options as Jonah grows.

I consider it a privilege to help make Patrice's life easier and Jonah's life more comfortable, and I really had fun designing this bib to be as functional and cute as every other one of our long sleeve bibs! Thank you, Patrice for allowing me the opportunity to create something for your ridiculously cute son!

Let's Talk Maternity Leave

I am officially a mere five weeks away from my due date and am seeing words like "dilate," and "efface" creep into my vocabulary. Since weeks after finding out I was pregnant I've debated what kind of (if any) maternity leave I should take from Serwa Chic. After much discussion and prayer, I've decided to take a twelve week maternity leave from the day my son is born.

Why twelve weeks?

Truthfully, because my first instinct was to say I thought I'd be ready to jump back into things after eight weeks. I added on an extra four weeks to allow for sleeping issues, hormonal issues, and just adjusting to life with two kiddos under two. While I feel like twelve weeks is the best choice for my family, the truth is that twelve weeks is also the best choice for you - my customers.

I could take a significantly shorter leave, but I refuse to run the risk of overwhelming myself and allowing my product quality or my customer service to suffer. Those are things on which I refuse to compromise. My goal is to be a bit bored at the end of twelve weeks and find myself ridiculously excited to jump back into Serwa Chic. That's much more preferable to me (and I hope to you!) than being overwhelmed at six weeks and feeling like I have to get started again.

Perhaps this baby will be an amazing sleeper and nurser, and perhaps we'll have very little adjusting that needs to be done. Perhaps I'll genuinely find myself ready to open the Serwa Chic shop again after five or six weeks. If that's the case, I'll gladly do just that! It seems to me it only makes sense to give myself and my family too much time than too little though.

I'm due on August 11th, and if I go until my due date the Serwa Chic shop will open again on November 3rd. If I begin labor earlier, the re-open date will be twelve weeks from the day I give birth (the date will be on Serwa Chic's home page).

Until that day, the store will stay open and you can rest assured that anything you buy will be shipped to you in 1-3 days...guaranteed! If you're considering ordering from Serwa Chic, I would highly suggest you get those orders in soon!

Thank you for allowing me the time to focus on my family and enjoy the adjustment period of having a newborn. Thank you as well for allowing me enough time to come back to serving you with excitement and passion!

Andrea recently ordered a custom Serwa Chic nursing cover for her newly postpartum sister. She carefully chose the fabric (which translated beautifully into a nursing cover) and I was glad to sew the signature Serwa Chic cover - complete with extra room, boning, velcro enclosures, a pocket, and a neck strap! One of my favorite things about sewing is watching beautiful fabric turn into something both beautiful AND useful!

The Perfect Nursing Cover

I rarely used a nursing cover when I was breast feeding my first born. Not because I felt comfortable nursing in public - quite the opposite, actually. I was so UNcomfortable that I'd nurse my son in someone's back room, in a public bathroom, or really anywhere away from people. In fact, I didn't go out a whole lot during the nine months I nursed - especially if it was close to time for Jude to eat.

Now to be honest, some of this stems from my own hang ups. But as I look back, I realize that much of my shyness to nurse in public resulted from not feeling like I could adequately cover myself and nurse at the same time.

I used the cover I owned approximately three times and quickly found it too frustrating and complicated - ditching it in favor of isolating myself every time my son needed to eat. I'm not a particularly large girl, but I found that the cover wasn't nearly wide enough to cover my postpartum love handles. The top of it continually flopped down so that I needed to hold the fabric upright with one hand in order to see that Jude was latched properly. And then perhaps most frustratingly, the top sides of the cover refused to stay put on my shoulders. My son and I would be happily nursing away when it would slip down. Time after time. After time.I got very tired of pulling it back over my shoulder every two minutes, or worse -inadvertently giving a show.

I knew there had to be a way to make a cover to allow even the most modest of women to feel comfortable nourishing their child. I lengthened the width of my covers to allow extra coverage of postpartum bellies, and added boning to the top so that Mom could look at her child without everyone else seeing. Designing a cover that eliminated the need to hold up that fabric was very important to me - it very often necessitates both hands to get the baby situated and yourself comfortable. For things like nipple cream and a spare pacifier, I added a pocket to the nursing covers as I realized how nice it'd be to have both of those things immediately on hand after nursing. And finally (my favorite feature), I added velcro to the top two corners of Serwa Chic nursing covers. Mamma can velcro the two pieces in place and even with the most active of nursers - still stay covered! If desired, you could even feed your baby, burp her, and then latch her onto the other side while the cover stays firmly in place.

I know that you might assume that my excitement over these covers is because I make them, but I assure you that's only part of it. I'm due with our second child in eight weeks, and I've begun sewing a Serwa Chic nursing cover for myself. I'm so excited by how much easier nursing in public will be for me. I'll no longer feel the need to nurse in the bathroom when we're out to dinner, tuck myself away into another room when we have guests over, or leave the company of good friends for forty minutes every three hours!

When I originally designed the covers, I took note of my own experiences and asked many other Moms about their frustrations in current covers on the market. Serwa Chic nursing covers are a product about which I feel passionately. Considerable time, thought, and research have gone into how to make them as functional and useful as a cover should be. At the time of design, I wasn't sure if we'd even have more children, so reaping the benefits of the Serwa Chic design hadn't crossed my mind. But from one (soon to be nursing) Mom to another - this may very well be the perfect nursing cover! I can barely contain my excitement that I get to make use of one of my favorite Serwa Chic products!

New Stuff On Its Way, I Promise!

I feel as if I need to apologize for taking so much time between posts, and I wanted to let you guys know what I've been working on! I haven't posted as much as I usually do because I've been doing tons of work behind the scenes! I have a brand new batch of fitted diapers (that are serged instead of turned and topstitched - they're so much more thin!) ready to hit the shop, and am very close to finishing up some really adorable long sleeve bibs to have in stock. I wanted to wait to post both of these products until my new website is up (no sense in uploading photos, adding shipping and pricing info, tweaking html, etc., on two different sites, after all).

Along with that, I've been hard at work behind the scenes of the new website - customizing, adjusting, changing, and adding to it to create the exact look and experience I'm hoping for my customers.

My goal is that all of this will culminate - which much anticipation and excitement - this week! I hope to have the new website up and functioning by the end of this week, and I hope to have it fully stocked as well! That's right - Serwa Chic should be able to officially move towards having in stock products. Do you know what that means? You can order a product on Sunday, it'll ship on Monday, and you should have it in your hands by Friday! You'll no longer have to wait the usual turn around time of two weeks for me to make your product and ship it - I'm so very excited!

I'm hoping this will mean a more easily managed schedule for me, and more consistency in products for you! I didn't want you guys to think that my lack of posting meant that I wasn't working. I've actually been working hard - just working behind the scenes. Very soon all that work will pay off in fantastic in stock products for YOU!

Notice Anything Different?

That's right friends, I have a brand spankin' new blog background that is designed to coordinate with my brand spankin' new website (which will be up soon)! My husband complained that the pinkish red color of my previous design hurt his eyes, so with the help of Allison at Hopper Graphics, we came up with a color scheme that I feel like fits Serwa Chic perfectly. It's simultaneously classy and funky without being so trendy that it'll be out of date in six months. I love it, and I'm so excited to see my new website coming together. Even more importantly, I'm excited about how much easier it'll be for you to use!

In the meantime, I've become a Fitted Diaper making fool! My time right now is primarily spent cutting, sewing, and serging Fitted Diapers to have stocked in our Serwa Chic store. Keep an eye out - they're coming soon!

I've been working towards finding a shopping cart for my website that is easier to navigate and more efficient for use on my end. I eventually found a company called Go Ashley Go that actually caters to work at home Moms (or WAHM). It will most likely still be a couple of months before the new site is up and running, but included in my new shopping cart/web design package was a new logo design! I was so excited to have my logo done professionally, and LOVED working with designer. Allison of Hopper Graphics designed several sheets of logo proofs for me, and after some feedback from me, I ended up choosing these three designs! The middle logo will be my primary logo (and is my favorite!), but I like having the flexibility in colors and styles of the other two for any other documentation or branding I might need.

I need to make a confession to you. I have a bit of an addiction. The first step is admitting you have a problem, right? Okay, here goes:

I have a fabric fetish.

My husband can verify said fetish and exhibit A would be the stacks of fabrics I have piled in the corners of my workspace and in our extra room. Exhibit B would be the wide eyed gasp I can't help but emit when I see a patterned fabric that I NEED. Obviously, I will drop over dead if I don't have it now, and my mind whirls into how cute the fabric would look in diaper/nursing cover/wetbag/bib form.

Now...I could get counseling for this problem. I could go to rehab. I could even join a fabric fetish support group, but none of these things seemed like the right solution for me. So what did I do?

I started a business. A business that necessitates the perusal of fabrics and indeed - even buying lots of fabrics! That oughta solve my problem - don'tcha think? :)

So I just happen to have piles of fabric that I save for when I have the chance to do "In Stock" products. My goal is to eventually have Serwa Chic be a mostly In-Stock store, and the first phase of that plan is to make each line of my product in bulk to have in stock. Because I'm making so many of the product at once and work on them in between custom orders, it can sometimes feel like it takes forever to finish up my stock. Which is why I get so excited - giddy even!- when I see the end of my in stock project nearing.

So you now can understand why I feel it necessary to announce that my In Stock All In Ones are almost finished! I'm starting to be able to see how perfect the fabrics and colors I'd previously picked out are looking in diaper form, and I'm realizing that I will probably be able to have the All In Ones stocked by early next week!!! Exclamation points don't my excitement justice - I can't wait to announce that the All In Ones are stocked! I promise, I'll stop blogging and finish up sewing those All In Ones just as soon as I remind you about....

Homemade Cloth Diaper Detergent!

Hello! I'm so excited to do a guest blog post for Jen about the homemade cloth diaper detergent I have made and used for about a month now with great success!

Like Jen, one big monthly expense we have is detergent...or should I say, it was! I switched to Tide HE Powder several months ago after hearing lots of cloth diapering moms rave about how much they loved it. The one time I purchased it, I must have found a great deal or I must have temporarily lost my mind, because under normal conditions, there's no way I would pay that much for detergent.

As I neared the end of my box of Tide, I started thinking about trying homemade detergent. Jen had inspired me by posting her recipe and pictures of her detergent so I decided to give it a whirl. I made a powder version that is working great!

I knew the ingredients I was using (bar soap - Ivory, Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, and 20 Mule Team Borax) wouldn't be good for cloth diapers, so I looked for a good recipe. Really, it's just the soap that isn't good for diapers; it can cause repelling and all sorts of other issues.

I use the website DiaperSwappers.com every day for questions and discussion about cloth diapers, and found a forum thread with two great detergent recipes, one of them for cloth diapers! There is a lengthy discussion in the thread about the ingredients used (Are they "safe"? Are they "green"? Turns out, yes and yes!). It's a good read with great tips!

For the Diaper Detergent, here are the ingredients:

1 cup Arm & Hammer washing soda
1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
1 cup OxiClean Free

Mix all ingredients for use. Use 2 Tbsp. for small loads and 1/4 cup for large loads.

I found all three ingredients at our local Kroger store. I live in rural Kentucky, so you don't have to live in a hip, granola area to find these things. The most expensive ingredient was the OxiClean Free, so check around for the best price and coupons. I have the detergent stored in an empty OxiClean Free container. Because you don't use much, it'll last for a very long time!

I always use a cold soak/rinse cycle first (no detergent), followed by a hot wash (with detergent), and another cold rinse. I say the detergent has been very successful! No stink, no repelling, no problems! As with anything, use it at your own discretion. If you have invested a large amount of money in your diaper stash and you don't trust some random chick on the Internet's detergent recipe, it won't hurt my feelings! But if you're interested in making a switch to a simple, cheaper detergent, I hope you give it a try!

Homemade Laundry Detergent

I'm certainly not a homemade laundry detergent expert, but I thought I'd share my recent experience with making my own and how it's working!

One of our most expensive monthly items is laundry detergent, so when I came across a link for how to make your own, I bookmarked it and always had it in the back of my mind to try. About a week ago our store bought stuff was running low, so I figured I'd go ahead and give it a whirl. I didn't take pictures of it because I was doing it in small steps in between taking care of Jude and sewing, so I'm really sorry for not having any pictures to post. However, if you click HERE, you'll find a fantastic tutorial complete with photos. This was the tutorial I followed (the only difference being that I let the soap boil for awhile even after it had dissolved. This was pure accident - Jude had a meltdown, needed a diaper change, and had to be put down for a nap, and I completely forgot the soap was simmering). However, I actually think letting it simmer for awhile longer helped my detergent to not have any chunks and gave it the same texture as my store bought detergent - a jello-ish kind of thing.

I've used the homemade stuff for six or seven loads, and it works perfectly! Since Jude hasn't shown any reactions to any of the other detergents we've used, I use it for his clothes, too. I'm hesitant to use the homemade stuff for his diapers, though - I'm afraid the Borax might be too harsh on a baby bum.

I will say though, that my skin is notoriously weird about detergents (and perfumes, actually), and more often than not they cause me to break out. This homemade stuff hasn't caused any breakouts!

If you click on the link, the author has a breakdown of how much you save per year by making your own detergent, and how much the cost of one batch ends up being. I made one batch, and put about a third of it into an empty All Free&Clear container we had. The other two thirds are in a covered bucket in our garage. It takes us about a month to go through the All detergent, which leads me to believe it'll take us about three months to go through my homemade batch. My guess would be that the ingredients will last us at least another three batches - making an entire year!

I'm so excited to be able to cross off "laundry detergent" from our grocery list AND save us some money in our monthly budget!

Because we have SO much cloth diaper friendly detergent, I haven't ventured into making my own cloth diaper detergent yet. I'll soon have a guest blogger to explain to you how she made her homemade cloth diaper friendly detergent, and what she thinks about how it works!

As always, I'm eager to hear if you've tried to make your own laundry detergent - how it worked, didn't work, and any tips and tricks you want to share!

Serwa Chic - Blog Designer?

Lately, I've been able to use some of my web design skillz (because it sounds much less nerdy when you say it with a "z") to design some fellow mama's blogs! Designing blogs and logos is actually a lot of fun for me, as I'm able to put my creativity and love for patterns and textures together!

Quite awhile ago, I designed a blog for Trish. She has seven (yes, seven!) beautiful children, and she wanted pictures of each of them included in the background. I have to admit that half the fun of designing the blog was looking at their adorable little faces!

More recently, I designed a background for The Creative Mommy. She has an Etsy store, and was looking to draw a little more attention to her blog.

And then of course, I've designed the Serwa Chic blog and my personal family blog. Before beginning Serwa Chic, I actually considered going into web and logo design, so it's so much fun to take advantage of that knowledge not only in my own website/blog/logo, but also use it benefit others!

While browsing recently, I came across an awesome tutorial that I just HAD to pass along to you guys. It's for an infant car seat cover - basically a blanket with straps and velcro. We had Jude in November, so throwing a blanket over the car seat was a given. What I didn't expect was how many people felt it their duty to pull down the blanket to peek at our sleeping baby - thereby waking him up and making me deal with a fussy infant for about forty-five minutes.

...ahem....not that I'm bitter or anything.

So while our new little one will be born in August, this car seat cover is perfect for when the weather gets cooler. I have to be honest - chances are good I'm not venturing out with two kids in the heat of August anyway.

So to be clear, this isn't something I'm making and selling. I'll probably make one of these for the new baby, but felt like it was such a great idea and such a great tutorial that I couldn't help but pass it along. Happy Sewing!

Homemade Baby Wipes!

(This is a cross post, but I've been asked by readers of the Serwa Chic blog to explain how I make my homemade wipes.)

Throughout the course of my first pregnancy, I set about trying to eliminate as many of the recurring costs of babyhood as possible. I knew we'd be trying to do this whole thing on a minister's salary, and I knew my eventual dream would be to be a stay at home Mom, so the frugalista in me went into overdrive. In my experience, two of the biggest recurring expenses are 1) diapers and 2) wipes. I knew we'd cloth diaper, but Shawn and I both had a gut reaction of "ew. gross." to the thought of using cloth wipes.

Now that I've cloth diapered for almost a year, the idea of cloth wipes doesn't gross me out any longer (I actually think it'd be pretty easy). However, it still grosses out Shawn - so out of respect for him, I make my wipes out of paper towels.

This serves three purposes that I love 1) It's significantly cheaper than buying wipes, 2) We don't have to go to the store when we're running low on wipes. We buy our paper towels in 12 packs, so we typically have plenty available when I need to make more wipes, and 3) I know exactly what is in the wipe solution

So how on earth do I turn a very regular roll of paper towel into wipes suitable for the most adorable butt in the world? Well first, I gather my supplies. 1. Roll of paper towel (we like select-a-size. you just need a small one for the pees but can use a couple for the rest) 2. Baby Oil 3. Baby Shampoo 4. 1 Tbsp. measuring spoon 5. Measuring Cup 6. Sharp Knife 7. Cutting Board 8. Butter Knife 9. An empty plastic wipes container

Cut the paper towel roll in half - width wise.
Beautiful. I take the extra one and set it aside for the next round of wipes I'll need to make.

I use the butter knife to help separate the adhesive that's between the paper towel and the cardboard middle. Then I pull out the cardboard middle.

Voila! I tend to give the cardboard piece to my son to play with 'cause I'm just that fun. Keep an eye on your kiddo if you do the same - the cardboard will most likely go in his mouth where it'll become soggy and the perfect consistency for getting stuck in his throat. Just take it away when it starts getting mushy.

This is what the paper towel roll will look like in the wipes container - now all that's left is making the solution!

I then put about 1 and 1/3 cups of water in the measuring cup (riveting pictures, huh?)

And then add 1 Tablespoon of baby oil:

And then 1 Tablespoon of baby shampoo (seriously, I'm totally going to win a photojournalism award for this stuff):

Then I shake it all about...

After it's thoroughly mixed (or unthoroughly - there's really no wrong way to do this), I pour the solution onto the wipes. A couple of tips for this part -

1. Keep the paper towel roll in your wipes container so that the excess solution falls into the container.

2. Start from the inside. I found when I poured from the outside that the inside didn't get nearly wet enough.

Then I just pour the rest of the solution on the paper towel roll - rotating the roll as I go:

Pull away the first "wipe" (because they can stick together pretty easily and it's a pain to try and find the first wipe when you have a very impatient naked kiddo on the table), close the lid, and you're all set!

I was recently able to convert a friend's velcro BumGenius diapers to snaps for her soon to be born son! This was a great way for her to save some money AND stretch the life of her diapers!

I won't be advertising my ability to convert from velcro to snap on the website because I'm not sure how many people are interested in doing so. I am able to though, so if you're interested, feel free to email (serwachic at yahoo dot com) for a price list and shipping information!

Another Bib!

Despite the busyness of the Christmas season, Serwa Chic hasn't been completely slacking! After getting some feedback about the original bib, and putting some more thought into the design - here is the completed Serwa Chic long sleeve bib! My next step is to make one for my son, and try it out (including running it through the wash several times to make sure it holds up well), and then....then, my friends....I'll be offering custom order bibs on the Serwa Chic website!

Look for it after the New Year!!

I was so honored to make diapers for the winner of Patrice's Serwa Chic Giveaway! Entrants to her giveaway only needed to post a comment, and I was shocked to see that a whopping 255 people commented to enter!

I can't lie - reading most people's comments of how cute the diapers are was a huge confidence boost. I still have days where I worry that what I make isn't worth it or that I'm making a dumb financial move to start my own business, so it's always nice to read such positive feedback about my products.

The winner ordered an XL Teddy Bear-iffic Fitted Diaper, and XL Happy Frogs AIO, and a Tangerine 2 Size AIO (and an in-stock nursing cover)!

I also had a special request from a good friend to make a long-sleeved bib for her messy eater. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but am actually very pleased with it. I DID learn that I need to make the sleeves more roomy, and perhaps lengthen the bib a bit, but I plan on tweaking the design in the next couple of weeks.

My philosophy on things I make, sell, and carry is that it needs to be something that I've tried, used, and loved. I've considered making bibs before, but wanted to make sure what I made was something I LOVED. To be perfectly honest, I'm actually really excited about making long-sleeved bibs! They're especially perfect for childcare situations (daycare, babysitter, grandma's, etc.) where the caregiver would have to change the outfit after every snack/meal with a regular bib.

So in about three weeks' time, be on the lookout for Serwa Chic long sleeved bibs!
